panhandle hook

A panhandle hook is a storm system that develops in the panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma and ejects northeastward into the Midwest. A Gulf low or Texas Low is a low pressure area that forms or intensifies over the Gulf of Mexico. The January 1886 blizzard was caused by a strong extratropical cyclone which initially dropped southeast across Texas before strengthening while it moved through the South and East, near the Eastern Seaboard through New England. The Armistice Day Storm of Nov. 11, 1940, was another example of a panhandle hooker. The main event of the winter was when a crippling and historic blizzard struck the Northeast in late January, dumping up to 3 feet of snow in and around the metropolitan areas.

Hopefully, this blog will help explain to….

As the forecast solidifies, a blizzard watch would be either downgraded to a Winter Storm Warning or Winter Weather Advisory for blowing snow or upgraded to a Blizzard Warning.

From: “Brian Bernard” Comparable to the 1993 Storm of the Century, the storm was labeled a bomb cyclone after barometric pressure readings dropped in excess of 24 mbar (0.71 inHg) over a 24-hour period. The storm that sank the EDMUND FITZGERALD was a Texas Hooker or Panhandle Hook. “Wear a mask and say a prayer because Jesus and germs are everywhere” (10/26) 5:

The name is derived from the region of surface cyclogenesis in the Texas and Oklahoma "panhandle" regions.

Panhandle Hook: Formed: November 10, 1940: Dissipated: November 12, 1940: Lowest pressure: 971 mbar (at Duluth, MN) Maximum snowfall or ice accretion: 27 inches (68.6 cm) (Collegeville, MN) Damage: $2.2 million (1940) Casualties: 154 fatalities: Areas affected: Midwestern United States google_color_bg = "FFFFFF"; The areas near Lake Superior in the Minnesota Arrowhead region experience weather unique from the rest of the state. According to the center, much of the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier are at risk of “excessive rainfall,” which could lead to flash flooding. google_ad_channel =""; By at least 1999, the term “Texas Hooker” was used for the same weather phenomenon. From Infogalactic: the planetary knowledge core. google_ad_height = 600; All rights reserved (About Us). Some of the most memorable snowstorms are panhandle hookers. Such systems ubiquitously develop a surface low-pressure system in the northwestern Texas and western Oklahoma area (as an eddy effect interaction of the topography of the Rocky Mountains in relation to the jet stream) with associated warm front and cold front, with attending snow to the northwest of the low and severe thunderstorms to the southeast -- the "hook" refers to the left-ward east to northeast jog in the track of the surface low as it is plotted on a weather analysis chart. The cyclone was at its strongest as it moved by New Jersey. Required fields are marked *, Copyright 2020 Iowa Storm Chasing Network, After the powerful storm system that moved through on Monday, it was clear that many have never heard of the phrase Derecho to describe the event that unfolded.

Initially pleasant weather ahead of the northeast-bound storm can lull the unwary into dressing lightly and then being surprised by heavy snow accompanied by howling easterly and northerly winds as the low traverses south to east of their location. Thunderstorms may be found south of the track. A significant cold spell was ushered in by this system across portions of the southern and eastern United States. The third lowest non-tropical atmospheric pressure ever recorded in the mainland United States occurred as the storm passed over Mount Clemens, Michigan, where the barometer fell to 956.0 mb (28.23 inHg) on January 26. On 5 Nov 1994, Matthew D Will wrote: Cyclogenesis is an umbrella term for at least three different processes, all of which result in the development of some sort of cyclone, and at any size from the microscale to the synoptic scale.

Thermodynamically, it is not different from any other type of thunderstorm, but the top of the cumulonimbus cloud is usually quite low. Thundersnow, also known as a winter thunderstorm or a thundersnowstorm, is an unusual kind of thunderstorm with snow falling as the primary precipitation instead of rain. 2. This is why when it comes to a forecast for these types of systems, it is often very difficult to pinpoint down on where that rain/snow line will set up. Panhandle Hook. Storms that develop over the Texas/Oklahoma Panhandle are very common in the fall and winter, however every few years one storm will be stronger than normal. Thunderstorms are possible Sunday afternoon. The 2015–16 North American winter refers to winter in North America as it occurred across the continent from late 2015 through early 2016. Temperatures dropped rapidly, in some cases more than 50 degrees. A blizzard is a severe snowstorm characterized by strong sustained winds of at least 56 km/h (35 mph) and lasting for a prolonged period of time—typically three hours or more. These storm systems can also generate very gusty winds, which impact visibilities. Elevated & Surface Based Storms: What Does it Mean. That “will likely lead to robust short term rainfall rates, likely topping 1.5 inches per hour” in the core of the storm, the center said. The name derives from the direction of the strongest winds that will be hitting an eastern seaboard of the northern hemisphere: as a cyclonic air mass rotates counterclockwise, winds tend to blow northeast-to-southwest over the region covered by the northwest quadrant of the cyclone. Lyrics written by Buddy Bernier and sung by Edythe Wright. These storms bring interesting weather to the Midwest and Great Lake regions. A panhandle hook storm has its origins as a strong shortwave low pressure system which traverses the base of a long-wave low pressure trough while geographically coincident with the southwestern United States. The “hook” describes the curved path that these cyclones take, first bending to the southeast and then curving northeast to Missouri across Iowa and into southern Wisconsin and on to the Great Lakes.

On the Köppen climate classification, much of the southern third of Minnesota—roughly from the Twin Cities region southward—falls in the hot summer humid continental climate zone (Dfa), and the northern two-thirds of Minnesota falls in the warm summer great continental climate zone (Dfb).

Now a Popeye's fast food restaurant on Google Maps. Tuesday is expected to be cloudy but relatively dry.

The storm itself killed only one person in Colorado, but flooding caused by the storm killed at least 3, one in Iowa and at least two in Nebraska and left ~140,000 without power in Texas. Located within the North American Cordillera, the Rockies are somewhat distinct from the Pacific Coast Ranges, Cascade Range, and the Sierra Nevada, which all lie farther to the west. If the associated jet stream is stronger than normal and there is colder than normal air in place in central Canada to provide a greater than normal temperature contrast with Gulf of Mexico moisture drawn northward by the developing panhandle low, surface cyclogenesis can be particularly energetic and cause a great swath of heavy snow to develop and blanket a large portion of the American Great Plains and upper-midwestern states in conjunction with very strong winds, the combination of which exceeds blizzard criteria. Colorado lows produce heavy wintry precipitation, and have a general east to northeast movement, impacting regions as far north as Winnipeg and as far east as the Atlantic coast. The topography of an area could refer to the surface shapes and features themselves, or a description. A total of 145 deaths were blamed on that storm. I’m not sure if it defined anywhere in some paper (research-types, chime in), but is a common weather term for storms that bottom out in a mean upper level trough and the move to the northeast in the southwest flow.

"These types of storms are referred to as 'Panhandle Hook’ because of the large turn northeastward in the path of the storm as it leaves the eastern slope of the Rockies,” said Mark Wysocki, an atmospheric sciences professor at Cornell University. The surface reflection usually picks up well as it rounds the bend. Texas Hooker Autumn marks the transition from summer to winter, in September or March, when the duration of daylight becomes noticeably shorter and the temperature cools considerably. The winter of 2013–14 was one of the most significant for the United States, due in part to the breakdown of the polar vortex in November 2013, which allowed very cold air to travel down into the United States, leading to an extended period of very cold temperatures. From: “Eric A. Helgeson” It’s different from river flooding, which can build slowly, fed over time by rain and, sometimes, melting snow. The 2013–14 North American winter refers to winter in North America as it occurred across the continent from late 2013 through early 2014. It embraces: Famous storms that were panhandle hooks are the Armistice Day Blizzard of November 11, 1940, and the storm which sank the Edmund Fitzgerald on November 10, 1975. The odds of that are relatively low: 5 to 10%, with a pocket of up to 20% in the southwestern corner of the state. Recent entries: By at least 1999, the term “Texas Hooker” was used for the same weather phenomenon. In addition to snow, graupel or hail may fall. The term has been in use since at least 1976. The storm dropped up to 25 inches (64 cm) of snow in the regions already hit hard with snow from the past 2 weeks. The system brought high winds and snowfall near and west of its path, resulting in blizzard conditions across portions of the Plains and East. This storm will even have some leftover moisture from near the Baja Peninsula, said the weather service’s mid-range forecast arm, the Weather Prediction Center. The most intense event, however, was an extremely powerful cyclonic blizzard that impacted the northeastern United States in the first week of 2018. The angry-looking sky caused people to take…, You may have heard of the phrases ‘elevated storms’ and ‘surface-based storms.’  These are terms many in the weather world understand but are not often discussed in public. google_color_bg = "FFFFFF"; A common track of a Panhandle Hook winter storm as it curves from Texas, northeastward towards the Great Lakes region. National Weather Service (Weather Glossary) By at least 1999, the term “Texas Hooker” was used for the same weather phenomenon.

Light rain could continue all day Monday morning. Flash flooding is a “rapid and extreme flow of high water into a normally dry area,” according to the weather service glossary. A panhandle hooker, also called a Texas hooker, is a name for a storm that forms in the panhandles of Oklahoma or Texas. The strongest, which could carry hail and high winds, would be most likely in Western New York. The storm system also brought some of the most coldest temperatures to the Northeast in its wake. The Early February 2013 North American blizzard was a powerful blizzard that developed from the combination of two areas of low pressure, primarily affecting the Northeastern United States and parts of Canada, causing heavy snowfall and hurricane-force winds. Blizzards can have an immense size and usually stretch to hundreds or thousands of kilometres. Thunderstorms may be found south of the track. The weather preceding the arrival of these storms can be very pleasant. The best chances for flooding are in the Southern Tier, where more than an inch of rain could fall today, the National Weather Service said.

Alberta clippers take their name from Alberta, the province from which they appear to descend, and from clipper ships of the 19th century, one of the fastest ships of that time.
